A jury at the Central Criminal Court has failed to reach a verdict in the trial of a 60-year-old married Co Kilkenny man who denies raping his then nine-year-old niece in 1990.

The jury told Mr Justice Paul Carney it could not reach any verdict after over five hours deliberation. The trial lasted five days. Mr Justice Carney thanked the jury of seven men and five women for its careful consideration of the case.
