A text message telling a client who would be representing him in court was "wholly disrespectful", a District Court judge has said. Judge Cormac Dunne apologised to a defendant for what he described as this "disrespectful manner" of communication.

David Cowley (41), Loughlinstown, Dublin, was charged with helping to run a brothel last December and with possessing 10 rounds of ammunition. He was in Dublin District Court to seek a striking out of his case because the book of evidence was not ready.

Mr Cowley told the court his solicitor was not present even though he had received a text message at 9.30am saying a barrister would appear for him. The judge said this was not an appropriate way for a solicitor to deal with a client.

Later, a barrister appeared to say she had thought the case was in another court and apologised.
