Tokyo - An earthquake strong enough to cause structural damage struck the Japanese island of Miyakejima, about 200 km south of Tokyo yesterday.
The earthquake, measuring 6.2 on the open-ended Richter scale, was the second major tremor to rock the island in a day. It struck at 9.25 p.m. (1.25 p.m. Irish time) and could be felt in Tokyo where buildings swayed. The Meteorological Agency said there was a possibility of a tidal wave, or tsunami, triggered by the earthquake.
