Blackburn striker Matt Jansen is recovering in hospital after being involved in a motorcycle crash while on holiday in Rome.

Jansen, 24, who was close to a call-up to the full England squad for the World Cup, is expected to be allowed home next week.

A statement on the club's official website, www.rovers.co.uk, read: "The club can confirm that Matt Jansen was involved in a motor accident in Rome last Sunday evening.

"Matt was admitted to hospital having suffered concussion and minor cuts and bruises.

"His girlfriend was travelling with him at the time of the accident, but was not injured.

"Matt was subsequently transferred to another hospital and remains there under observation.

"He is improving daily, but requires more rest before being given the all clear to return home early next week.

"The club's medical staff have been in constant liaison with the hospital. Matt will undergo further tests upon his return to Blackburn."

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson wished the striker a speedy recovery.

"I am very sorry to hear that," he said today. "I hope he will be okay and ready for the start of the new season."
