Delegates from Italy's three main unions today backed their leaders' call for a four-hour general strike on March 26th to protest the government's plan to raise the age at which people can draw a pension.

With a round of applause at a meeting of the unions, which represent 11 million workers, delegates agreed to stage their second half-day protest over pensions.

In October, a similar strike halted public transport and closed factories and schools.
