An Irish youth was being questioned by Bulgarian authorities yesterday about a stabbing incident at a resort on the Black Sea on Wednesday at 3am. Another Irishman was stabbed during the row but has recovered.

The youth (15) and his sister (19) were involved in the fracas at a nightclub that resulted in a bar manager being stabbed in the abdomen at the resort of Sunny Beach on Wednesday.

Another Irishman was stabbed by a Scottish tourist during the row. He has been released from hospital.

Irish tourists have been questioned about these incidents. No one has so far been arrested. The Irish teenagers' passports have been seized.

Last night there were conflicting versions of how the fight broke out.

Local media in Bulgaria claim the bar manager was stabbed with a bottle after being assaulted by drunken Irish tourists.

The Department of Foreign Affairs yesterday confirmed the involvement of two Irish citizens in the fracas.

"We are in touch with the individuals and the families involved, offering them consular assistance and we will be in touch with police and Bulgarian authorities," a spokeswoman said.

The teenagers were holidaying with their parents and are receiving advice from the Irish Embassy in Sofia.
