An article investigating Ireland's trade in "sham marriages" published by The Irish Timeshas been chosen as one of Ireland's two nominees for a European Parliament journalism prize.

The article, written by Jamie Smyth, social affairs correspondent for The Irish Times, in co-operation with Latvian journalist Alexandra Jolinka, investigated how some non-EU nationals are marrying EU citizens in the Republic to gain residency rights by exploiting the EU's freedom of movement directive.

Ellen Gunning is Ireland’s nominee for the radio category.
