Irish paintings sell in London

A number of paintings of Irish interest were sold at Christie's in London yesterday at above the expected prices.

A portrait of George, first Marquess of Waterford by John Zoffany RA (1733-1810) sold for £100,000. It was expected to fetch between £60 000 and £80,000. Two paintings by Dublin-born artist Robert Crone (1718 circa-1779), were sold for £29,900. They were expected to sell for between £15,000 and £20,000.

A portrait of Sir Philip and Sir John Perceval, believed to be by Thomas Pooley (born 1646), was sold for £5,520.
