As Ireland's hotly contested election campaign draws to an end, it appears few can escape the political machine - not even France.

The Labour Party today admitted that mystery surrounded the appearance in Brittany of an election poster of Labour Party TD Michael D Higgins in the main street of Quimper.

Puzzled citizens of the village awoke yesterday morning to find the poster of the Galway West TD pasted on a bus shelter in the French town.

"We knew that Michael D's appeal was widespread, but even we were surprised to see that he has supporters that far away from the Galway city end of his constituency," a party spokesperson said.
