The son of the Irish consul general in San Francisco was driving a car that hit a concrete barrier, killing one of the occupants and injuring four others, police said.

Richard Kelly (16), son of the consul general, Mr Declan Kelly, was driving near San Francisco on Wednesday when his car suddenly veered, climbed a hill and hit a concrete encased electrical box, witnesses said.

Richard Kelly, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not seriously injured. But a high school golfer was killed and three other teammates were seriously injured.
