Crashes on Irish roads claim nine lives in four days

Woman in her 20s dies after car crashes into wall in Skerries, Co Dublin on Tuesday

A woman in her 20s has died in a car crash in Co Dublin and a second woman has died in hospital following a crash in Co Roscommon on Sunday.

At about 12.30am on Tuesday, a car travelling on the R128 Rush Road in Skerries crashed into a wall, according to gardaí.

The woman who died was sitting in the front passenger seat. The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, and another female passenger in her late teens were taken to Beaumont Hospital.

Gardaí said there were no other vehicles involved in the crash.

The road has been closed to facilitate a forensic investigation.

Meanwhile, a woman in her late 80s has died after sustaining serious injuries in a separate crash on Sunday in Castlerea, Co Roscommon.

At about 2.05pm on Sunday, a car travelling on the N60 at Corrastoona Beg veered off the road and hit a wall, according to gardaí.

The woman was the driver and sole occupant of the car. She was taken to University Hospital Galway, where she passed away on Monday afternoon, according to gardaí.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information on either crash to contact: Balbriggan Garda Station (01 8020510), Castlerea Garda Station (094 9621630), or the Garda confidential line (1800 666111).

Deaths

The latest deaths follow two other fatalities on Irish roads on Monday and a further five people died as a result of crashes in Ireland over the weekend.

On Monday, a man in his 50s died following a collision between a truck and a car at Garryduff Cross Road in Paulstown, Co Kilkenny. The crash happened at about 7.30am. The driver of the truck was taken to St Luke’s General Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

In another crash on Monday, a male motorcyclist died after a three-vehicle collision on York Road in Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin.

The crash involved the motorcyclist, a car and a van, according to gardaí.

In Limerick on Sunday, a man died after the motorcycle he was driving crashed into a wall. The incident occurred at 3.30pm.

The man was pronounced dead and his body was removed to University Hospital Limerick.

An 11-year-old boy who was involved in a crash in Navan, Co Meath, over a week ago, died in hospital on Sunday.

The young was crossing the road on foot at Abbeylands South, Navan, on Sunday, October 16th, at about 9.50am, when he was involved in a crash with a truck.

He was airlifted to Tallaght hospital and later transferred to Temple Street where he died. The driver of the truck, a man in his mid-30s, was uninjured.

Hit-and-run

On Saturday night, Lee Henry (13) was killed in an apparent hit-and-run in Coolock, north Dublin. He was hit by a car, which failed to remain at the scene, as he crossed the road near Darndale Park at about 9.30pm.

He was taken to Temple Street where he was pronounced dead.

Gardaí in Blanchardstown are also investigating a fatal collision that occurred on Saturday evening involving two motorbikes. The crash happened at about 6.50pm on Hartstown Road and one man in his early 20s was taken to Connolly Hospital where he died a short time later.

Meanwhile in the North, a man in his 30s died following a single-vehicle crash in Randalstown, Co Antrim, early on Sunday.

The 37-year-old who died on the Portglenone Road in Co Antrim was named as Kamil Cervenka, a father of two originally from Slovakia.
