Man killed and another seriously injured in Cork crash

Gardaí appeal for witnesses to two car crash on Inniscarra Road outside city

One man in his early 20s died and another is in a critical condition in hospital following a two car crash on the outskirts of Cork city on Tuesday night.

The collision happened on the Inniscarra Road between Leemount Cross and Inniscarra Bridge at 8.30pm and the front seat passenger in one of the cars was fatally injured.

The young man, who was from the Gillabbey Street area of the city, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem.

The driver of the vehicle, who is from the Greenmount area, was seriously injured and remains in a critical condition at Cork University Hospital on Wednesday morning.

Three other men, all in their early 20s who were back seat passengers in the car, received non-life threatening injuries in the collision.

The driver and passenger in the other car, two women in their late 20s from Clonakilty but living in Ballincollig, also escaped without serious injury following the crash.

The emergency services including six HSE ambulances and Ballincollig Fire Brigade attended the scene to ferry the injured and deceased to hospital.

Gardaí closed off the road to allow a garda forensic crash investigator carry out an examination of the scene and the road remains closed on Wednesday.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have travelled on the road around 8.30pm or witnessed the collision to contact them at Gurranebraher Garda Station on 021- 4946200.
