Explosion at ESB substation cuts power to 15,000 in Dublin

Services restored after fire at Inchicore causes blackout over extended area

Power has been restored to up to 15,000 premises in south and west Dublin, after an explosion at a 220kV ESB sub-station at Jamestown Road, Inchicore.

According to Dublin Fire Brigade which has six units at the scene the incident began with an explosion which which ignited oil which was housed in transformers.

The explosion took place at about 7.25pm a Fire Brigade spokesman said.

ESB Networks said the incident caused a power blackout over a wide area around Inchicore, Tallaght and Lucan.

However an ESB networks spokesman said power was restored within 50 minutes and all premises were back online by 8.15pm.

Residents in the area were advised to keep their doors and windows closed in order to avoid the fumes.
