Iran's armed services have closed Tehran's new international airport on its first day of operation, a joint armed-forces statement carried on the official IRNA news agency said today.

Flights into the new airport were diverted to the old airport in Tehran.

Iran Air took over the new airport's operation from a Turkish-Austrian consortium yesterday after accusations from domestic airlines that the airport was unsafe in foreign hands.

The flights affected were from Dubai.
