London - Sir Christopher Cockerell, the inventor of the hovercraft died peacefully in his sleep at a Southampton nursing home in the early hours of Tuesday, Mr Warwick Davies, a close friend, said yesterday. He was 88.

Sir Christopher died on the 40th anniversary of the launch of the first version of his most famous invention.
