Insurance broker Marsh & McLennan said today it will pay $850 million to settle charges it conspired with insurers to rig bids.

New York-based Marsh, the world's largest insurance broker, said it neither admitted nor denied the allegations in last October's complaint by New York attorney general Mr Eliot Spitzer.

The settlement is with Mr Spitzer's office and the superintendent of the New York State insurance department.
