The boat used by two Enniskillen commercial eel fishermen on Lough Conn was unfit due to the lack of buoyancy tanks, a Garda witness told inquests in Ballina yesterday. The coroner for north Mayo, Dr Mickey Loftus, returned verdicts in accordance with the medical evidence that Mr Jeremy Irvine (29), of Windmill Drive, and Mr Trevor Boyd (32), of Glebe Park, drowned in the lake when their boat capsized.

They went missing on the lake on March 31st. Mr Irvine's body was recovered on April 29th, Mr Boyd's on May 21st. Det Garda John Clancy, Claremorris, said the boat was a safety hazard and should not have been used for any purpose on water.
