At least 170 people are confirmed dead in a flash flood that swept through a resort town in one of Indonesia's biggest national parks, a senior official said today.

A river in the Gunung Leuser national park on Sumatraisland burst its banks early on Monday aftertorrential rains.

It swept away roads, bridges and budget guesthouses popular with foreign backpackers and local tourists.
