MALE diplomats might not be the most rip roaring social creatures but their wives certainly are. Several of them are members of the very exclusive International Women's Club.
The idea behind the club is to help foreign women ease into Irish life. Aside from women in the diplomatic corps, wives of visiting businessmen also make up a large part of the membership. The organisation is so popular that it has had to put a ceiling on new members.
Coffee mornings, bridge, pot luck lunches and talks are well attended and the mother and toddler group is hugely popular. They've just shut down for the summer after a jolly end of year lunch at Fitzers in Ballsbridge but before they did, they elected a new committee which is headed up by Christine Rebet of France. The club is also open to Irish women - Maeve Hillary, wife of ex president Patrick Hillary is a member and at the club's last bridge tournament, Dorothy Rothschild and Maeve were winning partners.
