Donegal man killed during Australia trip

A 25-year-old Co Donegal man has died in a workplace accident in Brisbane, Australia.

Rory McMenamin from Newtowncunnigham was crushed by a truck on Tuesday while changing a tyre at a tyre depot where he worked.

He was taken to a nearby hospital but died a short time later from serious head and internal injuries.

Mr McMenamin was a graduate in accountancy from Dundee University and had travelled to Australia with friends earlier this year. He planned to spend a year there.

His parents were holidaying in the west of Ireland when they were told of their son's death.

Crash claims second victim

A woman injured in a road traffic collision in Co Kerry on Monday evening has died at Kerry General Hospital. Her husband, the driver of the car, died at the scene on the N86 near Anascaul at about 5pm on Monday after his car collided with a lorry.

James (David) Broughall, (40) from Dingle, had worked as a panelbeater in Dingle. His wife, 37-year-old Claire Broughall worked as a hair stylist in the town.

Their removals will take place at 6pm on Friday to Dingle parish church. They will be buried at Milltown Cemetery in Dingle on Saturday.

Minister to give evidence in trial

A TRIAL date has been set in the case of a Limerick man accused of making a false statement to gardaí about an alleged incident involving Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea.

Matt Larkin, Altimara Court, Thomondgate, Limerick is charged with making the false statement at Henry Street Garda station in Limerick on October 5th 2007.

It concerned an alleged incident involving Mr O'Dea at the Bank Bar on O'Connell Street in Limerick on September 27th last year.

Judge Tom O'Donnell adjourned the case for hearing to the afternoon of September 18th next. Mr O'Dea is to be called to give evidence on that date.

Mountain charity challenge begins

An attempt by 60 people to climb 26 mountains in under 100 hours in support of charity began on Ireland's highest mountain, Carrauntoohil, in the Macgillycuddy's Reeks early yesterday.

Some 20 organisations such as the AIB, Defence Forces, Microsoft, Nike Bayer and Quinn Direct are taking part in the Bayer 100-hour challenge. They are due to finish on Mount Errigal in Donegal on Sunday morning after climbing mountains in Clare, Cork, Tipperary, Limerick and Waterford.
