Nine children killed in Peru bridge collapse

LIMA – A suspension bridge packed with schoolchildren snapped in Peru on Monday, killing at least nine and injuring dozens of others who plunged into a deep ravine, the mayor of the Andean mountain town of Coracora said.

Most of the injured were aged 10 and 13, and two of the dead were teachers who were with the students when the pedestrian bridge collapsed. Helicopters were sent to the town, about 600km (370 miles) southeast of Lima, but could not land because of bad weather.

Protests in Sudan after executions

KHARTOUM – A crowd of angry demonstrators burned shops and cars in a local market in south Khartoum yesterday, a day after nine Darfuri men were executed for killing a newspaper editor.

Some 5,000 people turned out under a heavy police presence to attend the funerals of the nine men, found guilty of killing Mohamed Taha Mohamed Ahmed in September 2006.

Some chanted slogans in support of the Sudan Liberation Movement, a rebel group which has been fighting the government in the western region of Darfur. – ( Reuters)

Accused camp guard appeals

CHICAGO – Accused Nazi death camp guard John Demjanjuk filed another US court appeal yesterday to stop his deportation to Germany, where he faces trial for complicity in the deaths of 29,000 Jews during the second World War.

Lawyers for the 89-year- old Ukrainian-born retired car industry worker asked a federal appeals court in Ohio to reinstate a stay blocking his deportation and to consider whether it was improperly revoked last week. – ( Reuters)

Polish inquiry into fire rescue efforts

WARSAW – Poland has opened an investigation into rescue efforts in the country’s deadliest fire in almost three decades.

Six children were among the 22 people who died in Monday’s blaze, which gutted a three-storey building occupied by homeless families in the northwestern town of Kamien Pomorski.

One of the 77 residents at the hostel was still missing. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the blaze, and have not ruled out arson. – ( Reuters)

Jail term for Goody’s husband

ESSEX – Jack Tweed, husband of Jade Goody, who died of cancer last month, was sentenced to 12 weeks in jail yesterday for an assault on a taxi driver after a drinking binge.

Tweed (21) was found guilty at Epping magistrates court in Essex last month. – ( Guardian service)

Troops may stay in Iraq after June

WASHINGTON – US troops could remain in the Iraqi city of Mosul after a June deadline for withdrawal following a spate of high- profile attacks by al-Qaeda in Iraq, a US commander said yesterday. – ( Reuters)
