Man pursued by gardai ran into sea
A man ran into the sea after being pursued by several Garda cars from Clontarf to Sutton, writes Aoife Carr. The 32-year-old man is due before Dublin District Court this morning in connection with a number of incidents in north Dublin on Saturday.
According to gardaí, the man took possession of a car early on Saturday morning in Ballymun after threatening its owner. He was later seen by gardaí in Clontarf at around 12.30pm and a number of patrol cars gave chase.
He was pursued to Sutton, where he crashed the car and ran into the sea. He was arrested and brought to Clontarf Garda station. He was not armed and no one was injured. However a number of cars, including patrol cars, were damaged during the chase.
Doctors told of plan to fight cuts
Junior doctors were briefed yesterday by the Irish Medical Organisation on its plans to fight a decision by the HSE to cut up to €40 million from their overtime, grants and allowances.
The State’s 4,500 junior doctors have already voted for industrial action on the issue, but this is unlikely to take place ahead of a legal bid by six doctors, to be heard by the High Court next month.
Three die in separate crashes
Three pedestrians died in separate road crashes in the North at the weekend.
Zbigniew Bartnicki (52) was killed when he was struck by a car as he walked along the Tullyvar Road in Aughnacloy at about 8.45pm on Saturday.
In Coleraine, Patsy Fairley (83) died in hospital after being hit by a car at the junction of Railway Road and Circular Road shortly after 4.15pm on Saturday.
Earlier, Edward Millican (21) from Coleraine died when the Mini Cooper in which he was travelling crashed in the Ballyhacket Lane area of Castlerock.
A 17-year-old youth was also injured in the one vehicle crash.
McGuinness to run for Europe
Fine Gael MEP Máiréad McGuinness has been selected to run again in the Ireland East constituency, along with Senator John Paul Phelan. Ms McGuinness said she had “every confidence” that Fine Gael will hold on to the two seats won by her and Avril Doyle in 2004.
