Cruelty charge  for marinating cat

NEW YORK – A western New York state man appeared in court yesterday to face animal cruelty charges after trying to marinate his cat so he could eat it, authorities said.

Police discovered the cat in the boot of a car being driven by Gary Korkuc, of Cheektowaga, New York, when they pulled him over for running a stop sign in August, Buffalo Police spokesman Michael DeGeorge said.

He fled to Maryland following his arrest but was extradited back to Buffalo late on Thursday. The cat survived. – (Reuters)

Mother killed in protest about justice for child

CHIHUAHUA – Masked gunmen have shot dead a mother protesting outside the governor’s office in northern Mexico who was demanding justice for her murdered daughter.

State prosecutor Jorge Gonzalez says the three men pulled up in a car and shot Marisela Escobedo Ortiz.

Ms Escobedo had been protesting in front of the governor’s palace, seeking justice over the killing of her teenage daughter after a judge cleared the main suspect in April.

Seventeen-year-old Rubi Frayre Escobedo’s body was found dismembered and burned in 2008. Her live-in boyfriend had been charged with her murder. – (AP)
