16 wounded at military show in France

TOULOUSE - Sixteen people including four children were wounded after a soldier fired live ammunition during a military show in the southern French town of Carcassonne, a local official said yesterday.

The incident occurred during a demonstration by the Third Marine Parachute regiment in which a soldier used live ammunition instead of blanks. The soldier has been detained pending an inquiry. - (Reuters)

Labour's Scottish leader quits

LONDON - Labour's leader in the Scottish parliament, Wendy Alexander, has quit over a funding scandal.

A Scottish parliamentary group had recommended last week that Ms Alexander should be banned from Scotland's parliament for one day for breaching donation rules. - (Reuters)

UK forces kill Taliban raider

AFGHANISTAN - A Taliban fighter accused of masterminding attacks on UK forces in Afghanistan has been killed, the UK ministry of defence has said.

The 35-year-old, who was known as Sadiqullah, was killed by Hellfire missiles fired from a British helicopter last week. - (Guardian service)

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI may travel to Africa next year.

Vatican secretary of state Tarcisio Bertone said the decision on which countries the pope might visit would depend partly on security concerns. - (Reuters)

Violence at G8 summit protests

TOKYO - Protesters clashed with police in central Tokyo yesterday during demonstrations over the upcoming G8 summit.

More than 1,000 people joined the rallies and several were arrested. The protests took place a week before the summit, to be held from July 7th to 9th. - (AP)

Poland's first rabbis since WW2

WARSAW - The first rabbis ordained in Poland since the second World War received their diplomas from Warsaw's Rabbinical College yesterday. Nine students from the US and Israel were granted rabbinical rights at a ceremony presided over by Poland's chief rabbi, Michael Schudrich. - (Reuters)

Chechen rebels shoot six dead

MOSCOW - Rebels killed three policemen and three civilians in Chechnya yesterday. A police officer and a civilian were killed in the southern Vedeno district and two policemen and two civilians were in the Urus Martan district. - (Reuters)
