Chinese police shut down first gay pageant
BEIJING – Police shut down China’s first gay pageant yesterday, saying the event did not have a licence, writes Clifford Coonan.
The winner of “Mr Gay China” was supposed to represent China at a global event in Oslo next month.
Contestants and audience members were disappointed.
“No reason was given, of course. They never give a reason for this, ever,” said one man who had arrived to attend the event.
Polanski awarded 3,000 damages
PARIS – A newspaper has been ordered to pay film director Roman Polanski £3,000 damages for printing photos of his wife and son.
Polanski sued Le Parisien for invasion of privacy and had sought £40,000.
The photos, showing the director’s wife at a window and his son playing in the garden, were published the day after his arrival at his chalet in Gstaad, where he is under house arrest in a 32-year-old sex case. – (AP)
