Two men die in weekend road crashes

Two men in their 20s died in separate road crashes in Dublin and Westmeath over the weekend. Shane Doherty (20), Rathconnell, Mullingar, Co Westmeath, died after the car he was driving crashed into a ditch at Ballagh, Mullingar, at 8.30pm on Saturday.

Two passengers were taken to Mullingar General Hospital, where their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Gardaí at Cabra station, Dublin, are investigating the second fatal crash, which happened at 1.35am on Sunday at Military Road, Phoenix Park.

Mark Carroll (22), Dunard Avenue, Cabra, was killed after the car in which he was a passenger crashed into a railing.

Roads blessed in Tuam archdiocese

Roads were blessed after Easter Sunday Masses in the Tuam archdiocese yesterday in a special ceremony intended to encourage safety and responsibility among travellers, writes Patsy McGarry.

The blessing, which also took place last year, had been an initiative of Mayo County Council's road safety officer Noel Gibbons. Mr Gibbons then contacted other diocesan offices to encourage them to do likewise.

Fr Denis Carney, administrator in Westport, Co Mayo, said the idea had been well received by locals.

Death of FF councillor (46)

A Fianna Fáil councillor and brother of Carlow/Kilkenny TD MJ Nolan died yesterday. Cllr Enda Nolan (46), Bagnalstown, Co Carlow died at his home following a short illness.

He was first elected to the town commission in 1985 and to Carlow County Council in 1991. His late father, Tom, was the only Carlow man to be a government minister.

Search for stolen drawings in Dublin

Gardaí at Rathmines station, Dublin, are seeking assistance in tracing a number of drawings stolen from a flat in the area.

The 50 drawings were in an A3-sized black portfolio and are of great sentimental value to the artist. It is believed they may have been discarded by thieves.

Two charged  in Waterford

Two men last night appeared at a special sitting of Waterford District Court on charges relating to stealing shotguns from a home in Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford.

During a Garda operation in connection with the alleged offences, a patrol car was rammed. It went up in flames along with the other car involved in the incident.

The two men who appeared in court, aged 17 and 18, were arrested on an island off Annestown Beach. They were were taken ashore by lifeboat.
