Safety warning to swimmers

Irish Water Safety (IWS) has warned the public to beware of spring tides, which will pose an extra risk to those using the water this weekend. Bright weather is expected to attract over 43,000 yacht and boat enthusiasts to the water over the bank holiday weekend. Thousands more are expected to go swimming, diving, surfing and angling.

The organisation has asked swimmers not to stay in the water too long. Average water temperatures along the coast are not expected to rise above nine degrees and freshwater will be a few degrees cooler. Anyone in the water too long will risk hypothermia.

They have also asked that the public drink sensibly.

John Leech, chief executive officer of IWS, said alcohol is a contributory factor in almost 30 per cent of drownings.
