Italian tourist on dangerous driving charge

Gardaí are awaiting a direction from the DPP in the case of an Italian tourist charged with dangerous driving causing the death of a woman this summer in Co Kerry.

Tralee District Court heard yesterday that Masimo Pirilli (32), Merano, Italy, was charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Verena Ganner (36), a front-seat passenger, on August 11th.

The collision occurred at Curaheen near Keane's pub on the Tralee-Dingle road when the Fiat Punto car Mr Pirilli was driving collided with a truck. Ms Ganner died at Kerry General Hospital.

Judge James O'Connor adjourned the matter to January, remanding Mr Pirilli on continuing bail.

Shannon policing cost almost double

The cost of policing Shannon airport this year has almost doubled as gardaí respond to threats from anti-war activists to have the airport shut down.

The costs this year of the ongoing Garda operation at Shannon, excluding salaries, to the end of September was €1.31 million, according to figures supplied by the Minister for Justice.

This is almost double the €738,018 spent on the operation during all of 2005 Since 2002, €4.2 million has been spent on Garda-related security at Shannon.

Five years for cannabis charge

A haulier who admitted in 1998 possessing £2 million worth of cannabis resin for the purpose of selling or otherwise supplying it to others received a five-year sentence at Trim Circuit Court yesterday.

Thomas Flood (41), St Ignatius Road, Drumcondra, Dublin, had skipped bail when he first came before the courts in in 1998. Judge Michael O'Shea sentenced him to a five-year jail term with the last year suspended on his entering into a bond to be of good behaviour on his release.

ESB pays horse owner €23,500

The ESB has been ordered to pay €23,500 to the owner of a brood mare who was killed when electricity cables fell on her. Breeder Peadar Carter, Ballyeden, Camolin, took the case against the ESB at Wexford Circuit Civil Court.

Vet fined €2,000 for banned drug

A vet from Johnstown, Co Kilkenny, has been fined €2,200 at Thurles District Court for possessing a prohibited animal drug and for having it for sale and supply on March 23rd, 2004.

Pat Cashman had pleaded guilty to possession of Furazolidone, a prohibited animal remedy, and having it for sale .
