Hurricane Run produced a gutsy performance to land the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot.

Ridden by Christophe Soumillon in the absence of Kieren Fallon, he looked in trouble turning into the home straight but under a fierce drive he got a run up the rails to claim the Group One prize by half a length.

Electrocutionist stayed on gamely for second, with Japanese challenger Heart's Cry the same distance away in third.

As expected, the runners were taken along by Godolphin's pacemaker Cherry Mix, although Frankie Dettori was content to sit off the pace on stablemate Electrocutionist.

Hurricane Run was caught flat-footed half a mile out and Dettori moved effortlessly past the 5-6 favourite to join the leader.

In behind Heart's Cry was travelling supremely well all the while, however, and looked the likeliest winner when taking up the running.

But Soumillon galvanised the Arc winner on the rails and he quickened up in fantastic style to land the prize. It was Soumillon's first success at Ascot in 23 attempts.
