Racing: Richard Hughes has spoken of his relief at being back in the saddle - but feels there are still issues with the penalties for breaking the new whip rules.

The jockey was found in breach of the guidelines twice in the first week they were implemented and stopped riding after the second incident at Kempton.

The British Horseracing Authority announced changes to the rules on Friday morning and Hughes immediately returned to the saddle, winning on his first ride back aboard Usain Colt at Newbury.

While welcoming the move from the BHA, he still feels the penalty structure is too harsh.

"It's great to be back. When I heard the news this morning the first thing I had to do was jump in the van and lose some pounds," he told Racing UK.

"I'm happy with the change and applaud the BHA for realising the rule that was in place didn't work. You don't know if something works until you test it out and they realised very quickly it wasn't going the right way and they've changed it.

"The penalties are still very severe. It's not as much prize-money, prize-money in Britain is deplorable and we get about £80 for riding a winner, but five days off can lead you missing £2,500 in riding fees with someone getting five rides a day.

"This is a move forward but the penalties are still very harsh for a very minor infringement."
