Irish hospitals and universities are to benefit from an €2.6 million fund for cancer research this year, it has been announced.
Cancer Research Ireland (CRI), the research division of the Irish Cancer Society, said some €2.3 million of the money will go towards scientific projects, including research on different types of cancer, and the psychological care of people with the disease.
A further €300,000 will help fund clinical trials in Ireland. The announcement was made at the launch of the annual Terry Fox runs today.
The runs will be held in approximately 60 locations around the country on Sunday 15th October in aid of cancer research.
Every year, CRI invites applications from cancer researchers for funding and applications are assessed by a board comprising Irish and international cancer clinicians and scientists.
Professor Cliona O'Farrelly, chairwoman of Cancer Research Ireland, said: "Seeing groups of scientists and clinicians from all over Ireland come together and tackle the challenges in the prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer is really exciting and crucial in improving the outlook for all cancer patients in Ireland."
