Heavy rain to hit flood-stricken east again

Heavy rain is being predicted this evening for the some of the areas most affected by last week's flooding.

As the clean-up operation for householders - particularly in Dunboyne, Co Meath, and north Dublin - is continuing, Met Éireann is warning an inch of rain is expected to fall this evening and tonight.

It says Dublin and Co Wicklow are expected to be worst hit, with flooding likely because of remaining surface water caused by the record levels of rainfall last Thursday and Friday.

Met Éireann forecaster Mr Aidan Nulty said: "I don't think it will be like last week - we won't see rivers bursting their banks but there is accumulated water on roads and in hollows and that is likely to lead to flooding in those areas".

Mr Nulty said although some roads are likely to be flooded Met Éireann does not anticipate road closures.

AA Roadwatch is advising motorists to drive with extra care, reminding anyone driving through heavy rain to maintain safe distances from the car in front, to drive on dipped headlights and avoid driving through any flood water.
