Occupation: Managing director of Éireann Healthcare Publications, Ireland's largest medical publishing house, and chairman of Reality Surgery, producers of the world's first DVD library of operative surgery.

Personal & family: Married to Eileen. Four children - Gemma, Christopher, Andrew and Anna.

Professional golfer if I could have got my handicap down below 15.

If you were appointed Minister for Health, what would be your first priority?

Take the politics out of healthcare decision- making.

Do you have a phobia/what is your greatest fear?

Something terrible happening to one of my children.

Have you ever been a patient and were you a good one?

I have and I think I was a great one!

What three books would you bring to a desert island?

The Godfather, I read it again and again, 2000 Years of Irish Medicine, a rattling good read, I think we published it, My Life: Bill Clinton.

Have you a fail-safe method of dealing with stress?

No, I am stressed most of the time.

What is your favourite TV or radio programme?

Father Ted, Not the Nine O'Clock News and Eamon Dunphy from whichever nightclub he is currently broadcasting.

If you did not live in Ireland, where would you choose to spend the rest of your life?

Barbados.
