MANY well documented clinical and experimental studies have shown that aspirin can prevent bowel cancer (the recommended preventive dose is four to six tablets per week). Now there is evidence that aspirin may cure cancer of the large bowel, say doctors working for the Cancer Research Campaign Colorectal Tumour Biology Research Group in Bristol University.
They have found that aspirin can make cancer cells in the large bowel self destruct and that aspirin is actually most effective on the larger tumours. Bowel cancer claims more lives in Western countries than any other cancer disease apart from lung cancer. Current treatments for advanced cases of the disease, mainly surgical, have little effect on survival.
