Investigation to take place after wheels come off ambulance

Patients in vehicle unhurt, but Donegal councillor says questions must be answered

An investigation is to take place after two wheels came off an ambulance travelling with patients from Letterkenny, Co Donegal, to Galway.

The incident has been confirmed by the National Ambulance Service, which said it was conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding it. The incident happened just outside Sligo town on August 26th when the driver heard a loud noise and the ambulance came to a halt.

Mayor of Letterkenny and Sinn Féin county councillor in Donegal Gerry McMonagle said: “I understand there were a number of patients in the rear of the ambulance being transported to Galway for treatment. From what I am told the situation could have been much worse but for the action of the driver.

“There are now obvious questions which must be answered as a result of this very serious incident. Did this ambulance not undergo an NCT and how was it in such a poor condition that the two back wheels came off it? Nothing but a full investigation into how this happened is required,” he said.
