LIFESTYLE Q&A:Dr Nina Byrnes, GP, medical adviser for Hearing Action Week
Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
I do my best, but nobody is perfect and you have to be realistic. I worry about people whose only focus in life is eating well. We all have to live as well. Overall I think I’m pretty healthy.
How often do you exercise?
I go through phases. I’ve just taken up running now and I’m running about twice a week and walking once a week.
Im turning 40 this summer and I’ve set myself a goal to run a 10km. I’ve got an app called Couch to 5km and it’s quite easy and enjoyable. I just didn’t like running but a lot of people said, no one likes it when they start and you just have to stick with it. The more I do it, the more I enjoy it and now when the half hour is up, I feel I could go for longer.
Do you get your five a day?
I would have a glass of fresh juice every morning so that’s one. I would usually bring an apple and an orange to work. In a sandwich for lunch I’d get lots of lettuce and cucumber and tomato and in the evening I’d have salad or vegetables with my dinner. If I’m snacking I’d have a piece of fruit.
Do you worry?
I worry less, as I get older. In my 30s, I decided there were just a lot of things you don’t have control over and you have to go with the flow. I am a very positive person and I believe in looking forward. I don’t believe in looking back.
What do you do to relax?
Exercise has always been a stress release for me. Other than that, I love soaking in a nice bath or I enjoy a glass of wine once in a while. And spending time with my family.
What’s your unhealthiest habit?
I probably watch too much telly. My husband says my computer is attached to my hip. Between my iPhone and my computer, I probably do too much screen time.
