Minister for Health Mary Harney met this evening with management of Barringtons' private hospital in Limerick to discuss concerns surrounding the treatment of cancer patients at the hospital.

A spokesperson for the hospital described this evening's meeting as 'constructive'.

Barringtons Hospital agreed to suspend cancer treatment last week following a meeting with the Department of Health's Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Chief Medical Officer.

The move came after concerns were raised about the treatment of 10 women at the hospital from September 2003.

It emerged last month that a woman (51) had her breast cancer diagnosis delayed by 18 months following an error in reading her specimen when it was sent for analysis by Barringtons to University College Hospital Galway.

The attention of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA), an independent body set up to monitor safety quality, was then drawn to the treatment given to a further nine women at the hospital. It passed on the information to the Department of Health.

Ms Harney ordered a review of the records last week of all breast cancer patients seen at the private hospital between September 2003 and August 2007.
