The Progressive Democrats will contest the next general election as a "separate, independent party" with its own policy platform, the Tanaiste and party leader, Ms Harney, said last night.
She was speaking after the party selected a city councillor and businessman, Mr Oliver Clery, to be its candidate in Waterford.
Mr Clery, who runs an engineering business, defeated the only other candidate, Tramore Town Commission chairman Mr Michael Flynn. Mr Clery was elected to Waterford Corporation at the first attempt last year.
The party will hold a meeting of its parliamentary party in Waterford today.
