Bank of Scotland is poised to announce details of its £28 billion merger with the Halifax.
The announcement may come as early as today, following the bank's decision to delay publishing its full-year results, which are expected to reveal profits in excess of £1 billion.
Company bosses say merger talks are behind the postponement, adding that shareholders' interests will be best served by the delay.
Neither side would indicate how close they are to reaching agreement but a deal is believed to be imminent.
