Paris - A bitter row inside the Green Party over its choice of candidate for presidential elections next year could undermine the Socialist Prime Minister, Mr Lionel Jospin's plan to capture the ElysΘe palace.

The official candidate, Mr Alain Lipietz, who narrowly won the confidence of the Greens' 10,000 members at their annual congress last June, is under pressure to stand down after a series of "politically incorrect" blunders that have embarrassed the party and sent its popularity plunging.
