A Limerick environmentalist and local government candidate, Mr Eric Sheppard, died suddenly on Thursday night.
The 52-year-old Green Party candidate was due to hand in his nomination papers to City Hall yesterday. He was attending a meeting in St Mary's parish when he died.
Mr Sheppard campaigned for the closure of the city dump and the preservation of 200 acres of wetlands. He was shortlisted in the Ford Environmental Awards last month for writing on the importance of preserving the wetlands. He is survived by his wife, Doreen, and three daughters.
