A British woman who escaped a man suspected of murdering her boyfriend in an attack in the Australian outback is seeking compensation, according to court papers published today.

According to court papers, Ms Joanne Lees (28) filed a compensation claim last week in the central city of Alice Springs.

She could be awarded up to 50,000 Australian dollars (€28,175) in compensation under a government scheme for victims of crime.

Ms Lees was tied up by a gunman who is believed to have shot her boyfriend Peter Falconio on July 15th, last year, in central Australia.

Ms Lees told police she managed to escape from the gunman's pickup and hide in bushes for six hours before he left. She then stumbled onto the highway and flagged down a passing lorry.

The only trace of Mr Falconio was a small pool of his blood on the road where he was attacked. Police have made no arrests despite conducting one of the biggest manhunts in Australian history.
