MR John Gilligan was remanded in custody yesterday after appearing before a London magistrates court charged with drug trafficking offences.

Mr Terence Scarborough, prosecuting, told Uxbridge Magistrates Court that Mr Gilligan (44), of Corduff Avenue, Blanchardstown, Co Dublin, was accused of laundering £330,000 drugs money which gardai believe is linked to last weekend's seizure of 50 kg of cannabis worth £300,000 at a warehouse in Harold's Cross, Dublin.

Mr Gillignn was remanded in custody to Wormwood Scrubs Prison until October 16th. He was arrested on Sunday afternoon by British Customs officers as he boarded a plane to Amsterdam at Heathrow Airport. Officers discovered the money, made up of punts' and sterling, concealed in a silver metal case.

"On the 6th October, 1996, ford purposes of avoiding prosecution you concealed money representing directly or indirectly the proceeds of drug trafficking. It is believed that there is an association between Mr Gilligan and this seizure of drugs," said Mr Scarborough.
