Moscow - A senior Russian general said in an interview published yesterday that he backed the public execution of Chechen guerrillas.

Gen Gennady Troshev, commander of Russian troops in the North Caucasus region which includes Chechnya, told Izvestia he believed rebels should pay the ultimate price. "This is how I'd do it: I'd gather them all in a square and string up the bandit and let him hang, let everyone see."
