A gas explosion has killed at least 10 miners in a coal mine in the Polish town of Jastrzebie Zdroj, some 300 km southwest of Warsaw, state mining agency (WUG) officials said.

The blast occurred around 5 a.m. local time (4 a.m. Irish time), some 700 metres below ground.

"A gas explosion occurred this morning. Ten people were killed and 37 people survived, although one is wounded", WUG spokeswoman Danuta Olejniczak-Milian said.
