Gardai in Limerick are investigating the murder of a 25-year-old man who died in hospital from head injuries on Monday.

The investigation began after the State pathologist, Dr John Harbison, confirmed Mr Anthony O'Donoghue died from head injuries consistent with being assaulted.

The post-mortem was carried out at Cork University Hospital on Tuesday. Mr O'Donoghue had been transferred to the hospital's neurosurgical unit from the MidWest Regional Hospital a fortnight ago.

Gardai were called to Cherrydale Court on the Dublin Road shortly after 10 p.m. on February 19th, where they found Mr O'Donoghue in a concussed state. Supt Tony Kennelly, of Henry Street Garda Station, appealed to anybody who saw anything suspicious in the Cherrydale Court area from late afternoon to 10 p.m. on February 19th to come forward.
