Gardai rule out foul play in Leitrim deaths

Gardaí are satisfied there were no suspicious circumstances in the deaths of a man and a woman whose bodies were found in a car in a Co Leitrim beauty spot on Tuesday morning.

A post-mortem carried out by the State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, found no injuries on the bodies.

It is understood gardaí found evidence of a pipe connected to the car's exhaust.A Garda spokeswoman last night said that foul play was not suspected.

The green Vauxhall Cavalier car was found in a remote part of Glenfarne Demesne, a scenic area overlooking Lough McNean, near the Co Fermanagh border. The area, between Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim, and Blacklion, Co Cavan, is popular with walkers and young couples.

The Garda spokeswoman said the process of identifying the couple was continuing last night. Local sources said the woman was from Co Fermanagh and that the man may have been from England. He is believed to have been in his late 30s and the woman was in her early 20s.

The Garda has been in contact with the PSNI in an effort to determine the identity of the couple.

Locals said the man and woman had been frequent visitors in recent months. The Garda has confirmed a sighting of the couple in Glenfarne last Friday.
