Gardaí are treating as malicious a fire which broke out in the early hours of yesterday morning at a rural Garda station on the main Wexford-New Ross road.

The fire caused thousands of euro worth of damage to Carrigbyrne Garda station, about 10 miles from Wexford town.

Official records and office equipment were also damaged. However, the cells at the back of the building were not damaged.

Gardaí do not know the motive behind the fire.

The station, which was open on a part-time basis, was recently extensively refurbished. The building was also vandalised over the St Patrick's weekend when stones were thrown through the windows.

The fire was first observed about 2 a.m. Two Fire Service units from New Ross and one from Wexford town arrived on the scene but the fire had already taken hold in the front of the building.

Local gardaí have started an investigation into the fire, which caused considerable damage to the offices.

Gardaí believe that those responsible may also have been involved in damaging the windows of the rural station about seven weeks ago.

It's not yet known how much official Garda information was destroyed but there are fears that many records may have been lost.

The fire scene remained cordoned off yesterday to allow for a forensic examination.
