Gardaí in Limerick arrested six people yesterday evening in an operation in which firearms and ammunition were also seized in the Moyross area of the city

The arrests followed raids on houses in the troubled Moyross estate, including Pineview Gardens and Delmege Park at around 5.30pm yesterday evening.

Four males ranging from 16 to 19 years of age and two women in their 20s were being questioned last night by gardaí. Two handguns and a quantity of ammunition were also seized in the raids.

A Garda spokeswoman said last night the raids were part of continuing investigations into criminal activity in Moyross.

The six suspects were being held at various Garda stations in Limerick city last night under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. They can be detained for up to 72 hours without charge.

The arrests followed another feud-related shooting in the Moyross housing estate. A 20-year-old man sustained pellet wounds to the face when he was shot at a house in Delmege Park at 10.45pm on Monday.

The victim was standing in the doorway of a friend's house when the shooting took place.

While gardaí would not be drawn on the possibility that the man was not the intended target, it is thought this may be one of the lines of inquiry.

Monday's shooting in Delmege Park took place just 48 hours after an incident in nearby Pineview Gardens when a brick was thrown through the window of the mother of the two children injured in last month's petrol bomb attack..
