GARDAÍ HAVE warned motorists to expect additional checks for compliance with a range of driving regulations over the next six days.

The move - which comes in advance of this month's crackdown on learner-drivers who drive without an accompanying driver - will see gardaí checking tyres, lights, blood alcohol levels, and speed as well as licence compliance. Checks will also be mounted for compliance with NCT, road tax, the use of seatbelts and child restraints.

Currently, drivers on a second learner permit, previously called a provisional licence, are allowed to drive unaccompanied, but from June 30th next this is to change, and all drivers on learner permits will be required to have a qualified driver of at least two years experience with them.

A spokesman for the Garda Press Office said gardaí had undertaken 1,092 prosecutions so far this year against learner drivers who did not meet a requirement to be accompanied.
